Nortel scores in Optus' ATO deal - Optus yesterday revealed Canadian vendor Nortel, among others, would be a major winner under the Australian Taxation Office's network and telephony upgrade that has been scheduled as part of its managed services deal with the telco. John Simon, managing director of Optus' Enterprise and Business Group, yesterday said Nortel would be a key supplier for the network and telephony upgrade planned for the ATO over the coming six months. "We're using Nortel CS2K switches, which are high-end switches, and IP [internet protocol] phones from Nortel," Simon said. The deal would be welcome news for Nortel, which last year reassured Australian customers that its Canadian parent's financial woes would not impact them. ZDnet

Nortel Showcases New Hot Desking Application for Australia / New Zealand - Nortel has launched an out-of-the-box Hot Desking application that allows any company to give their staff single-number communications from any device and any number – a phone, mobile, softphone or smartphone, a meeting room, customer premise, hotel or home number. The application is designed to run on any IT environment as part of Nortel's vendor-agnostic Agile Communications Environment (ACE) software platform, announced earlier this year. "Optimisation of IT resources is a key part of any CIO's agenda in 2009," says Kirsten Gilbertson, Leader, Emerging Technologies, Emerging Markets, Nortel. "What we're addressing with ACE is the question of how you can leverage your existing investment to address, improve or innovate new business processes." Hello, an Avatar Is Calling You - Internet phone calls aren't just for telecommuters and grandparents anymore. In the coming months online games and virtual worlds, including Linden Lab's Second Life and Sony's Star Wars, plan to start charging players to call one another over the Web - even when they're not immersed in a game. The idea is to forge tighter bonds between the virtual communities and the people who inhabit them by helping players make real-world connections from their phones. On May 20, Second Life operator Linden Lab will announce plans to introduce features to connect its 650,000 active members via land lines, cell phones, and PCs. One service, called "Dial an Avatar," lets players call other characters in the virtual world, or dial into a virtual meeting from their cell phone - even when they're not sitting in front of their browser. The company plans to roll out new features throughout the year and may charge subscriptions to make calls into Second Life ... PC maker Lenovo has plans to launch a new virtual world called the "Lenovo eLounge," designed to boost sales of its machines. The lounge features Web phone calling software from Nortel ... Lenovo has more ambitious plans. The company's eLounge site - available on the Web to any PC user - will let customers talk to Lenovo sales reps, and voices will get louder as avatars get nearer to other residents of the site. "It allows us to create a cocktail party effect" in which people can listen in on several conversations at once, says Nic Sauriol, leader of Nortel's Web.Alive unit. Open Universities Australia of Melbourne plans to use the Nortel software to let prospective students chat with instructors and each other. Business Week

Nortel Unified Communications (UC) Review and Analysis - The review was conducted as part of CollabGen independent research. Resulting reports are divided into two parts: Part 1 on Unified Communication components; and Part 2 covers Contact Center systems and applications. The following are some highlights: Nortel's UC Product Integration: Nortel's Agile Communication Environment is a communications-integration software platform which abstracts and exposes communication (IM, voice, video, data) and network services (location, presence, policy, context), as Web Service interfaces, for integration into any application environment. The current version is 1.2 and version 2.0, which adds an adapter for Avaya Communications Manager, is scheduled for release in July. Using the Agile Communication Environment, communications functionality can be integrated into business applications and processes. This allows businesses to integrate these services into IT applications to build new, enhanced, value-added applications. TMCnet

Methods: Revolution sweeps the workplace - A manager in a manufacturing company is glaring at a senior executive from one of its suppliers across a teleconferencing link. The definition is good enough for each to see the whites of the other's eyes. The manager leans forward: "You are going to deliver these components on time, aren't you," he says, daring his opposite number to come up with an excuse for failing to meet his obligations. It's a scenario which, hopefully in less confrontational mode, could become commonplace, as new ways of working based on ubiquitous and universal connectivity – described by communications group Nortel as "hyperconnectivity" – sweep through the business world. Anyone who doubts that these new ways of collaborating are fomenting a business revolution need only look at patterns of traffic across the world's telecommunications networks. Financial Times

Nortel Sets up Network Operations Center in India - Nortel Networks said Tuesday that it has set up a Global Network Operations Center (GNOC) in Bangalore, to help remotely manage and support the networks of its carrier and enterprise customers in Asia, Europe, North and South America. The new center in Bangalore is Nortel's fifth network operations center worldwide. Nortel's other network operation centers are located in North America, Europe, China and in Gurgaon in north India. The Gurgaon center services customers both in India and abroad including Indian telecommunications service provider, Bharti Airtel, said Suresh Kumar, vice president for Managed Service Delivery at Nortel Asia Pacific. The company decided not to expand in Gurgaon but to instead set up another network operations center in Bangalore to provide disaster recovery to its customers, Kumar said. The Bangalore center, which began operations about four months ago, already supports more than 50 customers worldwide, Kumar said. PC World, India Times, Computer World

Build VoIP Solutions For SMB - Nortel's position on why VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) is ideal for so many small and medium businesses is firmly founded in the company's corporate slogan: "Business Made Simple." VoIP, in fact, is the very apotheosis of business made simple. First, let's debunk the doubts regarding VoIP's appropriateness for small and medium businesses. There has been, within the SMB community and beyond, a common misperception that transitioning to VoIP is too big a risk to take – that the technology hasn't sufficiently matured and that it's designed for larger enterprises (too expensive, doesn't scale). Wrong and wrong! And, we've put the proof into practice. Nortel has designed VoIP solutions that are built for SMBs from the foundation up, extending many of the same services and features as those afforded larger companies – and very simply applied.
