CAM's Corner

François LançonI have been receiving mails in the last few weeks asking me what am I going to write in this month's newsletter, after an eventful month. Well, I hope I can live to their expectations and am able to clear any of their fears.

'Amusing' is what has been our time at Nortel in the last few weeks. Not because we are worried about all the speculation happening in the market around our credibility, but in terms of how interesting and twisted messages can be made on our activities. Like take for example, when we announce that we are looking to sell our METRO Ethernet business, the media and competition conveniently missed out the word 'METRO' and claim we are selling off our 'Ethernet' business!!! (Now haven't we seen similar incidents happening before? Who are they trying to fool?). The other day, one of my partners forwarded me an email sent by our competitor to his friend with a few links to online press releases. The whole mail has 6 links and one line - 'If the article is from Reuters, it has to be true'. Do we need some one else who suddenly wakes up in such times to read out news to us and tell us which News Agency is credible and which is not. Well, im no one to comment on any person, but all I want to convey to each one of us are our best judges, isn't it?

The reality to the whole sequence of events is, Nortel like any other company on the planet today is affected with the global recession, however not to the extent of going down (as my dear friends across the bridge are popularizing, when they themselves are on a vacation for the for a few weeks). Nortel has demonstrated its growth plans in terms of restructuring and cash flows, major customer wins both in private (Verizon, BT) and public sectors (State WAN Wins). We appreciate our partners who have stood by us and had confidence in us when the 'devil's ink' is at work and who trust in our words and committements to them.

To clear the Air, our Ethernet Business is very much 'not available for sale' and you will see some new additions to the Ethernet switching portfolio in the next year.

Well, finally, it is the close to another Q and another year, the balance sheets of which will be for all to see in a couple of months. Numbers will speak for themselves and judgments can be made .

I would like to wish each and every one of you a very Happy and exciting New Year. Our offices are very much open and its business as usual.

Virtualising the License

Virtualisation has been one of the hot topics of 2008. But the technology has held pitfalls both technical and administrative. The technician has lots to think about - system loads, application management, server management and more. But IT administration can also suffer headaches in the world of virtualisation - such as how many licenses are needed in a virtualised environment. This year, Microsoft took a look at its licensing and decided that a new model is needed for virtualisation users. In this week’s sponsor interview, Tubes goes trend-spotting with Nortel’s Mitch Radomir, covering IP telephony, Web services, hosted services, and - yes - virtualisation.
